What Is Barbershop Harmony?

Barbershop harmony is a uniquely American a cappella style built on four voice parts—tenor, lead, baritone, and bass, sung together without instruments. When those voices lock in just right, they create a ringing “fifth voice” called an overtone that gives barbershop its signature sound. It’s fun, energizing, and surprisingly easy to try.

Tenor – Harmonizes Above the Lead

Lead – Carries the melody

Baritone – Fills the middle with harmony

Bass -Anchors the sound low down
